Phosphoric acid or orthophosphoric acid, chemical formula H3PO4, molecular weight 97.9724, is a common inorganic acid, is a medium strong acid. It is obtained by dissolving phosphorus tetroxide in hot water. Orthophosphoric acid is obtained commercially by treating apatite with sulfuric acid. Phosphoric acid dehydrates easily in air. Heat loses water to pyrophosphoric acid, and further loses water to metaphosphate. Phosphoric acid is mainly used in pharmaceutical, food, fertilizer and other industries, and can also be used as a chemical reagent.
Material structure
Orthophosphate is a phosphoric acid composed of a single phospho-oxygen tetrahedron. In the phosphoric acid molecule, the P atom is sp3 hybridized, three hybrid orbitals form three sigma bonds with the oxygen atom, and the other P — O bond is made up of one sigma bond from phosphorus to oxygen and two d-pπ bonds from oxygen to phosphorus. A sigma bond is formed by the coordination of a lone pair of electrons from a phosphorus atom to a vacant orbital of an oxygen atom. d←p bond is formed by overlapping the py and pz of oxygen atoms with the dxz and dyz vacant orbitals of phosphorus atoms. Since the 3d energy of phosphorus atoms is much higher than the 2p energy of oxygen atoms, the molecular orbitals are not very efficient, so the P-O bonds are triple bonds in terms of number, but intermediate between single and double bonds in terms of bond energy and bond length. The presence of hydrogen bonds in both pure H3PO4 and its crystalline hydrates may account for the viscosity of the phosphoric acid solution.
Application field
Agriculture: Phosphoric acid is a raw material for the production of important phosphate fertilizers (calcium superphosphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, etc.), and also for the production of feed nutrients (calcium dihydrogen phosphate).
Industry: Phosphoric acid is an important chemical raw material. Its main functions are as follows:
Treat the metal surface to create an insoluble phosphate film on the metal surface to protect the metal from corrosion.
Used as a chemical polish mixed with nitric acid to improve the finish of metal surfaces.
The production of detergent, pesticide raw material phosphate ester.
Raw materials for the production of phosphorous flame retardants.
Food: Phosphoric acid is one of the food additives, in food as a sour flavor agent, yeast nutrition agent, Coca-Cola contains phosphoric acid. Phosphates are also important food additives and can be used as nutrient enhancers.
Medicine: Phosphoric acid can be used to make phosphorous drugs, such as sodium glycerophosphate.
